Introduction

This document provides information about the Macintosh Installer 3.7.3, which you use to install Version 3.7.3 of Shiva Config, Dial-In Network Access, and the Shiva Chooser extensions.
Version 3.7.3 requires Macintosh System software version 6.0.7 or later.
See the "Read Me" file accompanying this release for complete installation instructions.
You must disable any anti-virus software (such as Disinfectant, Virex or SAM) before installing the Shiva software, because the Shiva software is installed with Apple Installer 3.2, which requires that all anti-virus INITs be off.
Failure to disable anti-virus software may result in corruption of the System File.
As a precaution, if you are using Virex software on your Macintosh, remove it from the hard disk drive, not just the system folder, prior to running the Apple Installer. Shiva is doing further evaluations of the interaction of Virex, the Apple Installer, and Shiva installation scripts. There have been some reported problems when Virex versions prior to Version 3.8 are present on the hard drive during installation.
This document is intended for the person responsible for installing Version 3.7.3 of Shiva software using the Macintosh Installer Version 3.7.3.

Macintosh Installer Version 3.7.3
==============================
Unlike previous versions of Macintosh Installer, Version 3.7.3 no longer deletes the Dial-In Data file during installation. Macintosh Installer Version 3.7.3 converts a Version 3.5 Dial-In Data file to a Dial-In Data file compatible with Version 3.7.3 As a result, users do not have to reconfigure network connections (name, telephone number, modem type, and speed) after installation. Users with converted Version 3.5 Dial-In Data files, however, will not automatically be able to take advantage of any modem strings added to Version 3.7.3. Those new modem strings must be manually added to the converted Version 3.5 Dial-In Data file with the Shiva Modems utility, found in the System Folder. The alternative is to remove the existing Dial-In Data file and open Shiva Modems Version 3.7.3, thus creating a new, complete Dial-In Data file.
Macintosh Installer Version 3.7.3 removes obsolete files (NM Prefs and NS Prefs) previously used by Shiva software Version 2.3 and earlier.
Macintosh Installer Version 3.7.3 uses the Apple Installer Version 3.2. The Apple Installer allows installation on the active startup disk without booting from a separate disk. It does not allow you to install your software onto a non-startup disk if File Sharing is enabled. If this is what you are attempting to do, first turn off File Sharing. For more details on installation, see the "Read Me" file.
NOTE: Dial-In Data files for Version 3.6.6 are compatible with Version 3.7.3.

Dial-Out support and help screens for Shiva LanRover/L have been added.
Dial-In Network Access
=====================
Support for additional modems has been added. See the “Modem Strings” section for the list that is current as of the date of this release.
Shiva no longer supports NetSerial as a Dial-In device. Although Dial-In may work, there is no guarantee that future software releases will support Dial-In Network Access over the NetSerial.
System Compatibility
====================
Shiva software Version 3.7.3 is fully compatible with System 7.0, with or without virtual memory or 32 bit addressing. It is also compatible with System 6.0.7 or 6.0.8. It is, however, incompatible with System versions earlier than 6.0.7.
Shiva Modems
============
Cosmetic changes to Shiva Modems make the use of each string clearer. The fields are larger, so you can see longer strings in their entirety.

Shiva has prepared a number of modem strings for the NetModem, TeleBridge, and EtherGate products. See the section "Shiva Modem Strings" for the list that was current as of the date of this release and for the changes that have occurred since the previous release. These modem strings do not apply to Shiva LanRover/L, which uses AppleTalk Remote Access CCL files. (See the section on "AppleTalk Remote Access" in this file for more information on LanRover/L.)

If there is a need to change a prepared string, add a modem or change the timeout, launch the Shiva Modems application in the System Folder and use the New or Modify command to make the changes.
The Shiva BBS will have more strings as they become available. The number for the Shiva BBS can be found at the end of this document in the "Reporting Problems" section.
Recommended Modem Speeds
==========================
Network-to-network connections require a v.32 modem (9600 bps); a v.32 bis modem (14,400 bps) is preferred.
Dial-In Network Access will work with 2400 bps (v.22 bis) connections, but Shiva recommends a v.32 modem for best results. Note that 2400 bps is less than 1% of normal wired LocalTalk minimum speeds.
NOTE: At speeds greater than 2400 bps, both Hayes and Shiva recommend using a file transfer protocol other than XMODEM.
Using High-Speed Modems
=======================
With TeleBridge, EtherGate, and LanRover products, new v.32 bis modems may require a “hardware handshaking” cable. Obtain a Macintosh MNP Modem Cable from your hardware dealer. Do not use the Shiva software flow control cable.

• When using the Telebit T2500 on an EtherGate or TeleBridge, the modems need to be configured manually. Use the Custom modem type and issue the Answer Setup string to the T2500. To do this:
~ Launch and then Quit the Shiva Modems utility. The Shiva Modems utility creates a default Dial-In Data file, if one does not exist.
~ Launch the Internet Manager.
~ Locate the TeleBridge or EtherGate by clicking twice on the appropriate Zone Name.
~ Open the device.
~ To use the Custom modem type in the pop-up menu, open the window, select Custom, and click on the INIT button. (This button is located on the center right of the TeleBridge screen; on the EtherGate, click on Remote Routing for the appropriate port and locate the pop-up menu at the right top.)
~ Set the speed indicated in the title.
~ Type the Answer Setup string in the window and press <Return>.

Shiva Config
===========
Version 3.7.3 resolves the following problems that were reported against previous versions:
• When using MacPrint and accessing a printer or plotter connected to a NetSerial or an EtherGate configured for shared serial, the Macintosh will no longer hang if the shared device is busy. Printing and plotting to devices connected to a NetSerial should, in general, perform much better. Asynchronous serial driver calls are much more robust.
• In Shiva Config, the remote network chooser now displays all Shiva internetwork devices in each zone.
• The Shiva Config AppleTalk Zones list is now the same alphabetically as the Macintosh Chooser AppleTalk Zones list.
• The help screens have been enhanced and updated. They also contain help for LanRover/L users.

Problems Unresolved
________________
This is a summary of the known problems with Version 3.7.3 of Shiva Config , Dial-In Network Access, and the Shiva Chooser extensions.
Shiva Config
===========
The following problems are known to exist with Version 3.7.3 of Shiva Config:
• There is a conflict with the Menu Bar icon and Balloon Help in some Dial-Out communications applications, such as MicroPhone or MacTerminal, on 9" screens. If Balloon Help is needed, switch back to the Finder and click on Balloon Help.
• In AppleLink on 9" screens the NetModem menu bar icon is partially off-screen so some of the modem lights are not visible.
• If a network-to-network connection is attempted and the other device is busy, the following message will be displayed: "Unable to communicate with device <Shiva Device Name>." Try connecting to a different device or wait until later to attempt the network-to-network connection.
AppleTalk Remote Access
=======================
Shiva software Version 3.7.3 does not support AppleTalk Remote Access or the ARAP protocol on NetModem, TeleBridge, NetSerial, or EtherGate products. For AppleTalk Remote Access dial-in compatibility, you must install a LanRover/L on your network. Call Shiva Sales (1-800-458-3550) for details.
You cannot use Shiva NetModem V2400s, NetModem v.32s, NetModem/Es, EtherGates, TeleBridges, LanRover/Ls, or NetSerials to remotely access an AppleTalk Remote Access server. You can make a modem-to-modem connection, but opening the Chooser drops the connection. Shiva does not support these products for use with AppleTalk Remote Access dial-out at this time.
You can, however, install the AppleTalk Remote Access software and Shiva Dial-In Network Access on the same Macintosh. Erroneous error messages may appear during the start of a Dial-In session. Click “OK” and ignore them.
Apple Communications Toolbox
============================
Shiva software version 3.7.3, which is compatible with Apple’s Communications Toolbox, does not support concurrent sessions. Use the Apple Modem Tool 1.1.1 instead of the Communications Toolbox.
Internet Manager Version1.8
=========================
Use the following procedure to launch the Internet Manager Version 1.8 when configuring a NetModem V2400, NetModem v.32, NetSerial, NetBridge, TeleBridge, or EtherGate:
1. Press the Option key when launching the Internet Manager. Keep pressing it until the first screen appears. This launches the Internet Manager as quickly as possible. Use this only when configuring Shiva hardware. Changing network numbers, zone names, and reassigning nets to zones will be disabled.
2. The Internet Manager Version 1.8 creates a corrupted form of the Version 3.5
Dial-In Data file. You must run the Shiva Modems Utility to create the correct default Dial-In Data file before running the Internet Manager. Do not run the Internet Manager immediately after the Macintosh Installer.
System Software
================
The following System 7 problems can affect the operation of Shiva software Version 3.7.3:
• Device pooling does not always function, due to an Apple Chooser cache problem. This was partially fixed by the Macintosh System 7.0.1 with System 7 Tune-Up 1.1.1. Pooling now works as long as you select your devices from the bottom of the list to the top.
• The Network dialog box does not update after single user dial in connection. The bottom half of the box appears white, but everything is functional. The dialog box updates correctly on disconnect.
Dial-In Network Access and System 7 Tune-Up 1.1.1
==============================================
Apple’s Chooser behavior has changed with the release of System 7 Tune-Up 1.1.1:
• AppleTalk defaults to “off” after System 7.0.1 with Tune-Up 1.1.1, is installed. Turn on AppleTalk in the Chooser and restart the Macintosh.
• If AppleTalk was “off” when the machine was last shut down, you will see an erroneous error message to the effect that AppleTalk and/or AppleTalk Remote Access needs to be re-installed. A similar message appears when you attempt to launch an AppleTalk Remote Access session or when you click on the Network Control Panel to start a Dial-In session. These messages are incorrect. There is nothing wrong with your Shiva software. Go to the Chooser, turn on AppleTalk, and restart your Macintosh.
